"Cinematical: 'Your Mommy Kills Animals' DVD Pulled by Amazon" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:19:13

In one of the most shameful acts of lobbyists effects on the enter industry in recent memory we have this story from Cinematical. Apparently a "well known" Washington representing the tobacco and food industry threatened legal challenge against retailers if the animal rights documentary "Your Mommy Kills Animals" was released. The biggest retail to not change it was the most important - Amazon. According to Matt Pizzolo. President of Halo-8 entertainment and the films distributor. "Our understanding is that there is no legal restriction on the film whatsoever and some retailers are buckling under threats that have no legal basis." So what this means is lobbyists are now going Ashcroft on the enter industry and stifling free speech. It's one thing if it was an all out contend and propaganda but most reviews regarded the movie as a well-balanced documentary that both sides of the consider would appreciate. If that's the case the lobbyist is exceed off suing Richard Linklater for making abstain Food Nation. I'm sorry but I see know way where this is excusable in a democratic society. | This is a communicate for editors past and present of the Voices divide of The Chicago Maroon. "DVD Review: Your Mommy Kills Animals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:50:29

My pulse evaluate immediately jumped during the first scene of Curt Johnson's documentary. A woman wearing a fur cover is brutally assaulted. I breathed a breathe of relief to see that it was "only" a commercial but before my daub could settle the next scene shows a dog being even more brutally assaulted. That footage sadly is real allowing no lowering of the blood compel. And so it goes throughout the film. If like me you didn't know beforehand the difference between animal rights animal liberation and animal welfare you certainly will by the time the end credits roll. Far beyond a simple educational primer though the doc drops you in the middle of a very contentious air and pushes every hot button imaginable. You're simply not allowed to not react. I found my emotions rolling between heated anger and communicate excite yet never entangle manipulated by the enter itself. Instead director Johnson presents opposing viewpoints in a fairly evenhanded make. The film is not entirely without its own bias -- which becomes more apparent upon a back up viewing -- but you're allowed to draw your own conclusions without feeling desire the filmmakers are shoving you into a predetermined corner. The basic framing device is the trial of the so-called "SHAC 7," a group of six animal rights activists accused of violating federal anti-terrorism laws by encouraging enjoin challenge protests on their web site. The group was formed as part of a worldwide race to stop animal testing at the Huntingdon Life Sciences laboratory -- really to change state drink the affiliate. Two members are interviewed and in their appearances interspersed throughout the film they be calm kind peaceful and entirely reasonable. How could they be any kind of threat? Then you see one of them shouting angrily through a megaphone and see other members of the group yelling invectives through megaphones inches from an executive's front door and check more angry confrontations between protesters and complain targets and it's hard not to feel somewhat outraged. But who deserves the churn up? From the point of view of certain animal rights activists talk is cheap; only action causes change. One of the SHAC 7 compares the animal rights movement to past social actions against slavery and racial discrimination. In that context. "by any means necessary" becomes the catchphrase. change surface the gentlest-sounding member of the SHAC 7 wonders whether it wouldn't be better to take enjoin physical challenge against the targets of their protest if the result of talking is going to be prison time anyway. Some animal welfare advocates accept that animal rights activists are taking things too far poisoning the public mind toward their efforts to protect and deliver animals from abuse. Your Mommy Kills Animals lays things out with historical perspective tracing the roots of both the animal welfare movement and animals rights activism to England. A wide variety of interview subjects then provides lively snippets of opinion and criticism as protests become more extreme. The cerebrate of the documentary narrows as it's revealed that the FBI declared that animals rights activists were the #1 domestic terrorism threat after 9/11 which leads to the legal case of the SHAC 7. After a fairly thorough grounding in these issues the doc moves on to PETA and their methods highlighting PETA's official policy on euthanasia as "often the most compassionate option," as stated on their web place. PETA also published a leaflet which gives the enter its label; "Your Mommy Kills Animals!" depicts a woman with bloody knife in transfer stabbing a hunt and on the reverse side cautionary messages directed to children: "There are terrible people who cause our furry friends to die that way every day. And guess what? One of those terrible populate is your mommy. Your mommy kills animals! I bet you didn't know that." The text is accompanied by graphic pictures of maltreated animals; the leaflet was to be distributed to children arriving to see The Nutcracker. Celebrities who approve PETA are criticized for not knowing what exactly. PETA stands for and for not knowing about some of their more controversial positions but the criticism is one-sided since we don't hear extended appear bites from any celebrities in defense of PETA. Both PETA and The Humane Society reportedly agreed to be interviewed for the enter and then backed out. The Humane Society comes in for a special grilling for their actions during Hurricane Katrina when they took in large amounts of donations yet might not have been as effective as smaller grass-roots organizations in actually rescuing animals. The documentary then circles back around to the SHAC 7 as we learn the outcome of their trial. My only real criticism of the enter is that I wished that more background had been provided on some of the interview subjects. We comprehend quite often from David Martosko of the Center for Consumer Freedom criticizing animal welfare and animal rights groups as well as from Shane and Sia Barbi ("The Barbi Twins") in defense of animal welfare and against certain animal rights activists. What made these folks the leading experts? (Other than the fact that Barbi Twins are listed as associate producers?) That's where the large number of interviewees works against the film; there are so many with such conflicting opinions that's it hard to journey through the inevitable double-talk. One example: white-haired Paul Wallace Watson * is interviewed and early on relates a passionate be of encountering a hunt that had been harpooned and was dying. Later in the doc he is heard saying that some young protesters are surprised when their radical actions result in their being arrested and questions whether they're fully aware of the possible ramifications for what they're doing. From my first viewing alone. I thought he must be a conservative environmentalist. Recently however. Watson was profiled in The New Yorker which paints a conceive of of him as one of the more radical members of the "save the whales / save our seas" aggroup ready to ram whaling vessels with his own ship to act them from killing whales. That casts his converse in Your Mommy Kills Animals in a slightly different lighten. No documentary can be all things to all populate. I highly disbelieve that anyone who is already heavily invested in the animal rights or animal welfare movements will change their object or their tactics after seeing the film. But for everyone else it does an effective job of awakening emotions and encouraging further investigation. The DVD from Halo-8 Entertainment features a crystal-clear video transfer. Extras are limited to a montage of trailers of titles from the distributor. It's disappointing that no real extras are included; it would have been interesting to hear from Johnson as to his own accent and what drew him to the affect and to undergo additional information on the interviewees as I noted above.* Corrected. Thanks to reader "Nobody" for pointing this out. Rick Berman the head of the anti-animal assort "Center for Consumer Freedom" invested $300,000 into the production of this film. (The film of course slams groups like PETA and the Humane Society of the US.) I'd heard (less specific) claims like LM's before. I'd desire to experience where this information is coming from. It would certainly inform the CCF's recent actions to try to limit distribution of the film. As for whether the film slams PETA and HSUS it does so from the inform of believe of activists who evaluate they are.

"We?re Animals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:24:05

Part of the cause of my is my over-active hit. Sometimes I lie there at night and I feel like my head is going to change integrity because I can’t stop thinking and I’m sort of in like with my ability to do it. We’re so lucky with our brains and our reasoning and our thoughts and ideas and memories. Don’t get me wrong plenty of my insomnia caused by concerns of the humdrum variety: bills and paperwork and endless lists of things to do. But lately a lot of it is a general aim of amped-ness about ideas - projects I be to do concepts I’m trying untangle things I’m trying to furnish. There are a lot of things to evaluate about it’s pretty cool but since I’ve been consistently over-extended for months on end now the only time I get to think is when I’m trying to rest. Ergo: the insomnia. This is an over-long introduce to something I’ve been thinking about a lot namely the photos of posted by Mr. Alec Soth As I said over there in comments. I just can’t stop thinking about that damn feature photo (above) and the entire series in general. Photos of museums taxidermy dioramas - persistent memes almost always tiresome.* The Barnes stuff is different - it’s like he’s showing me really what it is and utterly dispensing with the what it’s pretending to be. Most work addressing this subject matter tends towards facile plays on manufactured/idealized realities. I don’t need a photographer to show me those aspects of these environments - I can get there on my own. In this bring home the bacon there’s no ironic distance no clever posturing and it goes a lot advance. He’s peeling approve the layers of what makes these tableaux so enduringly appealing and showing that our drive to construct them is actually the most interesting and fucked up move. He is capturing the in between moments - the stops along the way. The idea of removing a thing from it’s natural environment transforming it into something entirely artificial and then re-inserting into another entirely fabricated “natural environment” and how that learn is so uniquely human and far afield from the animal instincts of the creatures being portrayed. And that is something I evaluate about a lot - how we are so lucky to have these brains of ours with their logic and their emotions and it’s so easy to hide there and drop (or at least try to) that when it comes drink to it we’re animals too. An exhibition of Barnes’ bring home the bacon opens at tomorrow. Saturday. September 15th and runs through October 27th. I was all excited to attend the opening until I noticed that the reception is from 4pm - 6pm. I will most likely be here at then hanging out with the bring home the bacon of this season’s. "An Introduction to Mammals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:21:13

Early mammals shared the planet with the dinosaurs. Some of the primitive mammals (which included early marsupials and insectivores) that lived during the latter part of the Cretaceous period (144mya-65mya) survived the global catastrophe that brought about the extinction of the dinosaurs. Some of the surviving marsupials gave rise to placental mammals which consider many of the mammals familiar to us today. The extinction of the dinosaurs marked the end of the Age of Reptiles and the dawn of the Age of Mammals (Source: Bryant). During the 10 million years that followed the extinction of the dinosaurs mammals diversified to occupy a variety of habitats (arrive sea air). Mammals evolved a be of feeding habits (carnivorous herbivorous insectivorous omnivorous). Mammalian PhylogenyThe evolutionary history of mammals (mammalian phylogeny) begins with a assort of vertebrates that dates back over 300 million years: the synapsids (Synapsida). Present day mammals are but one grow of synapsids. Synapsids also consider many extinct pre-mammalian species; among them were the predecessors to present day mammals animals. Therapsida (mammal-like reptiles) are a write of synapsid that became the dominant land animals during the mid-Permian period (286mya-248mya). They are a go closer in the evolutionary lie that lead to today's mammals. The cladogram below shows the evolutionary lineage from synapsids to present day mammals:Synapsida`--Therapsida    `--Cynodontia        `--Eucynodontia            `--Mammaliformes                `--                    |--Triconodonts †                    `--+--+--Montremata                         |    `--Multituberculata †                         `--+--Marsupialia (marsupials)                              `--+--Palaeoryctoids †                                   `--Eutheria (placental mammals) (Sources: 'Therapsida' and 'Mammalia')

"Service Animals" posted by ~Ray

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a function animal as any guide dog communicate dog or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a express or local government. function animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot act for him or herself. “Seeing eye dogs” are one write of service animal used by some individuals who are blind. This is the type of function animal with which most populate are familiar. However there are many different kinds of service animals that assist persons with many other kinds of disabilities in their day-to-day activities. A few examples include: o Alerting persons with hearing impairments to sounds o Pulling wheelchairs or carrying and picking up things for persons with mobility impairments o Assisting persons with mobility impairments with balance o Alerting persons with seizures o Condition signal assistance I have known a few families who have volunteered to raise dogs that back up individuals with disabilities and I’ve seen how much of a help and a friend these animals are to those they are helping and caring for. For those who are interested in possibly volunteering to train a canine companion for the intend of helping others here are a few links: -Their mission statement reads - “Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships”. Our Hearing Dogs spend four to six months in training learning how to alert people to sounds in their environment. We instruct our Hearing Dogs to alert people to seven sounds: fire and smoke alarms the telecommunicate oven timer alarm measure doorbell/door strike and name call (and sometimes the do by cry). Many people go on to inform their Hearing Dogs to alert them to more sounds. Hearing Dogs can be taught to warn populate to any repetitive sound that can be set up and practiced regularly. If a sound is inconsistent or too difficult to set up and practice it is hard for the dog to learn to bring home the bacon it. The Guide cater Foundation was founded in 1999 as an experimental schedule to find the abilities of miniature horses as assistance animals. There is a critical shortage of guide animals for the blind and command horses are an appropriate assistance animal for thousands of visually impaired people in the USA. In early experiments. Guide Horses have shown great declare as a mobility option and people who undergo tried Guide Horses inform that the Guide Horses perform exceptionally come up at keeping their person safe. These friendly horses provide an experimental alternative mobility option for blind people. People who have tried Guide Horses inform that the horses show excellent judgment and are not easily distracted by crowds and people. Guide horses are not for everyone but there is a strong demand for command Horses among alter cater lovers those who are allergic to dogs and those who be a guide animal with a longer lifespan.
